Key Railways in Kobe
There are three main railways in Kobe: Hankyu Railway, JR, and Hanshin Railway. JR, formerly the national railway, is highly convenient. For example, if you are going to Osaka or Kyoto, JR is the fastest. I was surprised when I came to Kobe because there were no JR lines near my hometown. Seeing regular freight trains running was astonishing.
It's only natural when you think about it; JR handles logistics across Japan, delivering goods from Osaka through the Chugoku region to Kyushu. People also travel on the same lines. When waiting on the platform for a train during the usual commute or a casual outing, a long freight train passes by. For someone like me, used to only local private railways and subways, this sight was quite surprising.
JR is perceived as a railway for long-distance travel. It's somewhat inconvenient for short-distance travel, but the fare is slightly cheaper for nearby trips. When going to Sannomiya, if JR is an option, it's preferable.
Hankyu and Hanshin have different locations. Many people think of Hankyu as running through upscale residential areas in the hills and Hanshin as running through downtown areas by the sea. You can ride Hanshin trains in a casual outfit like a T-shirt and sandals, but that's rare on Hankyu.
This difference comes from how the lines were initially chosen. Hanshin extended its lines to connect existing residential areas, resulting in very short distances between stations and winding routes on the map. This makes it very convenient for moving from one residential area to another.
On the other hand, Hankyu has a history of building residential areas along with laying tracks. Nowadays, it's common for railway companies to develop the area around their lines, but Hankyu pioneered this in Japan.
Understanding Kobe's three main railway lines in this way makes it easier to grasp. The region is long east to west and narrow north to south, so having three lines means many people use multiple lines. It's an environment where train enthusiasts can flourish.
